Internal Portraits
What is internal portraits, and how to get involved.
The process ‘Internal Portraits’ is a dialogue between myself as artist and you as participant. The aim is to make a deeper connection and thus explore together our position in the world. These artworks are being shown in a solo exhibition at the end of June.
During the process of creating an Internal Portrait I will be deeply engrossed in what you are saying, exploring my subconscious responses through art while we meet, and asking questions that arise as we connect, these are not set questions but ones I will be thinking about at the time of our meeting. The conversation will flow spontaneously from there, I have found that this sparks curiosity for both of us, and together we can investigate what arises. So far all of the artwork has been unique and different with each participant.
We will arrange to meet in a place where we can talk, such as in your home, cafes or parks.
While we are in conversation I will be drawing and painting. This doesn’t mean I’m not listening. On the contrary, I will be listening intently and the art work will flow subconsciously. I find that this is the way I both listen and work at my best. Silences in conversation may occur occasionally, there is no pressure to fill these moments which may add to the experience.
These are some of the words I've been thinking about recently, so they may come up in our conversations.
I will use the drawings and paintings done during the conversation to inspire the creation of a natural sculpture that herbs or wild flowers can be grown from. The wild flowers can then be re-planted outside and the sculpture can be used again in a cycle to encourage wildlife and natural growth. This represents something tangible in the real world, how we are connected and can change our environment in a positive way, created from our original conversation and art work.
My intention is to create a significant object that can be a symbol representing many different things to the individual. I have carefully chosen natural materials that are not harmful to the environment in order to create something meaningful but not damaging.
The sculpture will be a living object in the world,

These are some of the sculptural plant pots I have made. I'm excited to explore and develop this process and see where it will lead.
